Close Call: Driver Narrowly Avoids Gas Station Catastrophe in Salt Lake City

March 4, 2026 per KUTV , A driver is being hailed as incredibly fortunate after a high-speed incident nearly ended in disaster at a Salt Lake City gas station early Wednesday morning. The vehicle, traveling at excessive speeds, lost control and collided with protective concrete pillars, narrowly missing the main structure of the station.

The Incident Unfolds

The dramatic event occurred just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of 400 South and 700 East in Salt Lake City. According to Lt. Joe Cyr of the Salt Lake City Police Department, the unidentified driver was speeding down 700 East when they lost control of the vehicle.

The car ultimately collided with the concrete pillars situated at the gas station. Lt. Cyr noted that these pillars performed their intended function, preventing a much more serious outcome. While the vehicle sustained damage, the gas station itself was spared any significant damage thanks to the protective barriers.

Minor Injuries Reported

Remarkably, both the driver and a passenger who was in the vehicle at the time of the collision escaped with only minor injuries. The quick thinking and effectiveness of the concrete pillars are credited with preventing potential fatalities or severe damage to the gas station and its occupants.
