Utah Department of Corrections Sergeant Tragically Killed in Salt Lake City Rollover Crash
February 15, 2026, per KUTV: A sergeant with the Utah Department of Corrections, identified as Robert Hill, 62, died Sunday morning after his vehicle rolled multiple times near 700 North and 8000 West in Salt Lake City. Police responded to the scene around 7:25 a.m. and found that Hill had been ejected from his vehicle and was deceased.
Officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of a single-vehicle accident. Upon arrival, they discovered that the vehicle had left the roadway and overturned several times. Tragically, the driver, identified as Sergeant Robert Hill.
Victim’s Service and Departmental Response
Sergeant Hill had a long and dedicated career with the Utah Department of Corrections (UDC), having served since 1996. Throughout his tenure, he held various positions, including roles in the maximum-security unit at the Draper facility and, most recently, in enforcement at the Utah State Correctional Facility.
Jared Garcia, Executive Director of the UDC, issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over Hill’s passing. “The passing of Sgt. Hill is a profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community,” Garcia stated. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Robert’s loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.” The UDC is providing support to its staff as they process this tragic news.
Ongoing Investigation
The Salt Lake City Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that Sergeant Hill may have lost control of his vehicle while traveling southbound on 8000 West, causing it to roll into a nearby field. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Detectives from the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team are leading the investigation.
